…I am undone tonight:
Love in a subtle dream disguised,
hath both my heart and me surprised…
Clever, clever man. He avoided the admiration of the single ladies in the room—Maria, with her young girl’s love-struck awe, and Mary Bennet, looking pleasantly disturbed beneath her usual composed demeanor.
Even Miss Anne’s pulse had quickened, if the rise and fall of her breast was any indication, her focus on her hands folded on her lap. And… Charlotte could not be sure, but… Miss Anne seemed to steal a sideways glance in Colonel Fitzwilliam’s direction.
Vindication! Mr. Collins had assured her that Mr. Darcy was meant for Miss Anne—the very one who was Mr. Bingley’s friend. Darcy happened to be Lady Catherine’s third nephew, son of her ladyship’s sister, Anne. Everyone within the ambit of Rosings expected that he would marry his mother’s namesake.
When told, Charlotte had not believed it, and this shared look between the lady and the colonel confirmed to her that neither side of the supposed match was secure. Lady Catherine would be wise to cultivate Quartermaine for her daughter—and make the de Bourgh fortune whole in the bargain.
Again Charlotte wished Elizabeth were here. It would be great fun to hear her opinion on the matter.
The major’s gaze was for none but his hostess, and she was duly caught upon his hook. Lady Catherine’s face softened and her eyes glittered, occupied by some memory perhaps, an uncharacteristically vulnerable cast to her expression. Was it possible that she had once been in love?
Charlotte recalled her own words to Eliza not so long ago: I am not romantic. She had always believed this to be true, without question.
And yet… the song wound its way into her mind and heart and worked some kind of magic spell. She was Mrs. Collins. Safe now, and for life. She would never again fear for her future security. With that worry gone, a space had opened up inside her, and this song crept in there now, curled up and made itself comfortable, purring like a kitten.
Love in a subtle dream disguised,
hath both my heart and me surprised…
Charlotte was afraid to meet anyone’s eyes, and she too stared at her hands. Her heart wondered if it would ever be surprised by love.
Her mind rushed to answer, Surely not!
